The U.S. Soybean Federation

Created by the Minnesota Soybean Growers Association and the Missouri Soybean Association, the sole mission of the U.S. Soybean Federation (USSF) is to represent the voice of U.S. soybean farmers through advocacy and policy.

The USSF will primarily be made up of existing state soybean associations and new state soybean federations. As opposed to the ASA, USSF will not serve as a member organization, but instead work to focus and coordinate the representation of U.S. soybean farmers on Capitol Hill.

One of the most important features of this new organization is that every state affiliate will have equal representation. Regardless of the state’s production numbers or the number of state soybean organization members, each state will be allowed ten farmer delegates. That means an equal voice for each state, and more importantly, every soybean farmer.

FAQ’s
As a new organization, many farmers want to know what makes the USSF unique. Below are answers to some of the most commonly asked questions.

What is the mission of the USSF?
Our mission in forming USSF is quite simple: to create an organization that is solely focused on policy and advocacy that best represents U.S. soybean farmers. We will have no other objectives to distract us.

Why would a state association want/need to be affiliated with both USSF and ASA?
USSF is a federation comprised of multiple state associations and federations with a sole focus on advocacy and policy development. ASA offers additional membership services and educational opportunities.

How will USSF represent soybean farmers on Capitol Hill? What will you do differently than ASA?
USSF will be located in Washington, DC, with a commitment to minimal operational costs. Our distinction between ASA is that we are a federation of existing state associations and new state federations with a SOLE focus on advocacy and policy.

Will it be confusing to have more than one voice for soybean farmers in Washington, DC?
No. It’s not uncommon for an industry to have more than one organization representing them. For example, the American Farm Bureau Federation and the National Farmers Union have co-existed successfully for quite some time.

How will USSF policy objectives be defined?
Policy objectives will be established as our full delegate body and board of directors is seated. We want to make sure all of our state affiliates have an equal voice in setting our policy objectives. Right now our only stated policy is our support of the current soybean checkoff program.

Where will USSF’s operating funds come from?
Affiliated state soybean organizations and industry support.

What type of relationship will USSF seek with the United Soybean Board?
We anticipate having a very strong and productive working relationship with USB. Our organization is supportive of the current national checkoff program and its volunteer farmer-leaders appointed by the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture to oversee checkoff investments.

Who drove the formation of the USSF?
The USSF was created by soybean farmers in Minnesota, Missouri and Mississippi who believe in the importance of an organization that is solely dedicated to serving the best interests of U.S. soybean farmers through policy and advocacy.
