Farmer Q&A

Tell us a little about yourself.

I’m from Norborne, Missouri, and I’m married to my wife, Abby. I farm and work on a fifth-generation row crop farm. We raise corn and soybeans in the river bottoms of the Missouri River, and then also some upland stuff in our hills.

Tell us a little about your farm.

I currently farm with my dad and my grandpa. Abby and I also bought our own personal farm and this will be our third crop growing on it now. So, we’re enjoying that journey. It’s been fun, the decisions and challenges that brings. But so far, we’re enjoying them.

Should tractors be red or green?

Green, absolutely.

My dad is my biggest influence for sure. I go to work with him every day and follow what he does. Whether that’s right or wrong, I don’t know!

How do you take your coffee?

Black.

Tell us about your involvement in agriculture.

Throughout middle school and high school I was involved in FFA. I continued that as a State FFA Officer. When I graduated high school, I did some volunteering through college. I also got involved in Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity at the University of Missouri, where I was surrounded by a lot of other people that came up through FFA as well. I got to volunteer with them and had numerous agricultural opportunities for charities and organizations. And then since I’ve graduated, I’m currently serving on Carroll County Farm Bureau Board. Abby and I also participated in the Corn Growers Corn Roots Leadership program, and we’re now doing the Missouri Soybeans Missouri Grassroots Fellowship program.

What is your favorite planting or harvest snack?

I’m a big sunflower seeds person. I like the barbecue sunflower seeds. And I really like Popcorners.

What are you listening to while working?

I listen to a variety of music, everything from country to hip hop. I listen to a lot of podcasts. I like the You Betcha podcast for comedy. I listen to political stuff from Tucker Carlson and Andy Frisella. And then I listen to some Kansas City sports radio.

Who are your favorite ag influencers to follow?

On TikTok GrowinCorn2020, Tony Reed. And Millennial Farmer has always been one that I’ve enjoyed watching. I went to college with Gavin Spoor, so I enjoy supporting him.

Just start with what you have. Whatever your tie to agriculture is.

Does your family implement any sustainable practices?

We try to use as a little tillage and as little inputs as we can. Obviously, we use what we need to put out there and make a crop, but we don’t want to over-apply products. And then we’ve also been using cereal rye as a cover crop for the last probably five years. And we’ve been enjoying the journey with that. Sometimes not as much. But we’re working through some of the challenges of that.
