For a lot of soybean growers, a fungicide pass has become part of the routine.
Beans hit a certain stage; neighbors start spraying and the urge to protect yield potential kicks in. But University of Missouri research continues to show that fungicide and insecticide applications tend to perform best when growers make decisions based on field conditions instead of habit.
That matters more than ever right now. Tight margins have farmers looking harder at every trip across the field and every dollar tied to an input decision.
Mizzou Cooperative Extension data shows fungicides can protect yield under the right conditions, but the challenge is knowing when they will pay off.
The ROI Question Is Getting Harder to Ignore
Mizzou researchers estimate farmers apply fungicides to roughly 60% to 65% of soybean acres in the state. But multi-year strip trial data also shows those applications do not consistently pay for themselves.
Research evaluating fungicide applications across Missouri soybean fields shows the median yield bump came in around 1.5 bushels per acre. In some situations, that extra yield covered treatment costs. In many others, it didn’t.
That doesn’t mean fungicides are a bad investment. It means they work best when disease pressure, weather and field conditions line up.
Wet conditions, prolonged humidity and heavy canopy growth tend to create stronger opportunities for fungicides to protect yield. Hot, dry stretches usually reduce disease pressure and lower the odds of seeing a strong economic return.
Timing matters too. Applications driven by actual field conditions generally outperform applications made simply because the crop reached a certain calendar window.
Not Every Field Needs the Same Approach
Some fields deserve closer attention than others.
Fields with a history of frogeye leaf spot, dense canopies or consistent moisture often carry greater disease risk. Irrigated acres may also create conditions where diseases spread more aggressively.
Other fields may never reach a level where a fungicide application makes economic sense.
That’s why more growers are moving toward field-by-field decisions instead of treating every acre the same way. It takes more management, but it can also prevent unnecessary applications when margins already feel tight.
Mizzou Extension specialists encourage growers to weigh several factors before making an application:
- Current weather conditions and the forecast
- Disease history in the field
- Variety ratings
- Crop stage
- Scouting observations
- Soybean prices and treatment costs
Those factors usually tell the story better than the calendar.
Scouting Still Pays
Scouting remains one of the most valuable tools growers have during the season.
Walking fields during vegetative and reproductive stages helps identify disease pressure before it spreads and helps determine whether insects have reached treatment thresholds.
Not every disease warrants a fungicide pass. Not every insect sighting deserves an insecticide application.
That’s easy to forget during years when weather feels unpredictable and nobody wants to lose yield potential by waiting too long. But blanket applications can chip away at profitability just as quickly as missing a real problem.
Scouting also helps avoid poorly timed applications. Products applied too early, too late or under low-pressure conditions often struggle to deliver a strong return.
Resistance Is Part of the Conversation Too
There’s another reason growers are taking a closer look at automatic applications: resistance.
Agriculture has already seen what happens when too much pressure gets placed on a limited number of herbicide modes of action. Researchers warn the same thing can happen with fungicides and insecticides over time.
The more often products get used unnecessarily, the more pressure gets placed on diseases and insects to adapt.
That doesn’t mean growers should avoid fungicides or insecticides altogether. These products remain valuable tools and can absolutely protect yield under the right conditions. But targeted applications based on scouting, weather and disease pressure usually make more sense than automatic passes across every acre.
At the end of the day, the goal isn’t to spray less or spray more. The goal is to make each application count.
