Missouri Soybeans’ SOYLEIC Trait Selected as Top 10 Innovation

Seed World selects SOYLEIC® soybean trait as one of the most innovative products of 2021

In a competitive application process, SOYLEIC® soybeans were chosen to have the inaugural honor of being named as one of Seed World’s 10 Most Innovative Products of 2021. SOYLEIC® soybeans competed against applicants from across the seed industry and selected based on impact to the industry, market potential, return on investment for the grower, societal impact, scalability and overall innovative qualities.

Missouri Soybeans’ unique trait was selected alongside powerhouse seed companies including Bayer, BASF, AgVoice Global and more.

SOYLEIC®, is a true non-GMO high oleic soybean trait and was developed through partnerships between the University of Missouri, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Missouri Soybean Merchandising Council and the United Soybean Board.

“Bringing novel research to light with the ability to change the demand of soybean oil domestically and internationally, is why the SOYLEIC® trait is innovative,” said Bryan Stobaugh, Missouri Soybeans director of licensing. “It brings down the barriers associated with health claims, brings soybean oil back to human and animal use, creates new demand markets for soybean oil and expands the current high oleic portfolio with a major focus for us to transfer the trait into all maturity groups in the U.S.”

SOYELIC® is a high oleic soybean that has oil containing 75 percent or greater oleic acid and less than 3 percent linolenic acid. The improved fatty acid profile provides an oil with superior heat and oxidative stability for improved fry life and shelf life of prepared foods. High oleic soybeans have comparable oil and protein content to commodity soybeans which produces a soybean meal with the same composition of protein and amino acids.

“SOYEIC® soybeans are an excellent representation of Missouri Soybeans’ checkoff research at work,” said Gary Wheeler, Missouri Soybeans CEO and executive director. “Every small item adds up in research, and the checkoff gives us the opportunity to be compete, innovate, educate and promote one of the most versatile crops on the planet. It is amazing what one session of trial and error in the field can lead to – SOYLEIC® soybeans.”

This announcement will be featured in the January issue of Seed World, as well as online with a summary of all winners. Seed World is also featuring SOYLEIC® and Bryan Stobaugh in a panel-style video interview in a series, Seed Speaks. To find out more about this innovation, please visit soyleic.com.
